The 2013-14 U21s season was coach Alex Inglethorpe's first full season in charge of Liverpool's U21 side. The team continued to compete domestically in the new U21 Premier League, however the NextGen Series was suspended for the season due to lack of funding, therefore Liverpool had no European competition to take part in. The league format differed slightly from the previous season, as the league stage was not split and instead the full season was contested as one larger league. Liverpool fared well, and missed out on top spot by just two points. They were the highest-scoring U21 team in the country with 55 goals- 10 of which were supplied by Jack Dunn, the club's leading scorer. Following the conclusion of the league, the top 4 competed in two semi-final matches. As with the previous season, Liverpool were drawn to play Manchester United, with the Mancunians prevailing 1-0.

Although fewer players from the U21 setup went on to make their debut for the senior team compared with the previous season- only Brad Smith and Joao Carlos Teixeira able to do so, there was a buzz of excitement about the development of some of the young stars, including the likes of Smith, Dunn, Cameron Brannagan and Jordan Rossiter- who won the Academy Player of the Season award.
