[edit] Signings

After closely losing the title last season, Rafa was looking for two or three quality signings to put the complete team together and bring the title back to Anfield after 20 years. Benitez targeted mainly and his shortlist consisted of David Silva, Sergio Aguerro, Glen Johnson, Raul Albiol, Gareth Barry, Ezequiel Lavezzi, David Wheater, Carlos Tevez, Javi Martinez, Michael Owen and David Villa. It also consisted of other smaller players who Rafa would look to help bolster the depth of the squad. Rafa lost Gareth Barry early to Man City but as he wasn't looking to sell Alonso, it was irrelavant. Rafa was instead concentrating on the signings of David Silva, Glen Johnson and Ezequiel Lavezzi lodging bids for all 3 but with Chelsea and Man City bidding for Johnson, it so far looks as though he will go to either. Silva is more likely to come to Liverpool but face competition from Real Madrid. Lavezzi is most likely to become the first signing of the summer after a £12million pound offer had been lodged and Lavezzi is keen on the move. Javi Martinez is another player is likely to arrive being dubbed the "New Xabi Alonso" and is being prepared as a player for the future. There is speculation in the press that due to Hicks and Gillett's parent company losing £42.5 million for the previous year, that Rafa would not have money to spend on players but Rafa and Liverpool quickly rebuffed this and expressed there is money to spend. There is also talk of a takeover from groups looking to buy out the Americans with a Kuwait consortium and also DIC looking to buy Liverpool for around £350million. Liverpool have now officially signed their first player for the new season and that is Glen Johnson for a fee beleived to be in the region of £17.5 million pound.

On the 21st of August, after holes looked to appear in the Liverpool defence, Liverpool officially signed up 30 year-old Centre-Back Soitirios Kyrgiakos from AEK Anthens for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £2 millio[1]. Rafa's decision to play him on his first opportunity suggest that Kyrgiakos was bought as a replacement for the injured Martin Skrtel after the previous replacement Sami Hyypia had joined Bayern Leverkusen earlier in the transfer window.'
