He was brought in to provide competiton for Pepe Reina, and was handed the number 1 shirt, which was left vacant since the sale of Jerzy Dudek.

His debut came on 23 September 2008 aganist Crewe Alexandra in a 2-1 League Cup third round victory. He kept his starting place for the following round of the League Cup, where Liverpool were beaten 4-2 by Tottenham Hotspur on 12 November 2008. Cavalieri went on to make two further appearances in his debut season at Anfield; one in the Champions League, and the other in the FA Cup.
