Nathan Geoffrey Junior Eccleston (born 30 December 1990) is an English professional footballer currently playing as a striker for Blackpool, having played for Liverpool for six years from 2006. He had loan spells at Huddersfield, Charlton and Rochdale whilst a Liverpool player and only made nine first-team appearances during his tenure, failing to find the net.

Liverpool career[]

Eccleston was signed from Burnley at the age of 15 in 2006. Eccleston quickly rose through the ranks at the youth and reserves, to win his first place in a senior squad when he was named in the Champions League squad on 6 September 2009. His first start came shortly after on 28 October 2009 against Arsenal in a League Cup tie. He played his first League match for Liverpool against Fulham on 31 October 2009, coming on as a 78th minute substitute for Yossi Benayoun. Eccleston's first start for Liverpool came against Utrecht in a Europa League group stage match on 15 December 2009.

Having been used infrequently in his opening two seasons at Liverpool, Eccleston was loaned out to League One side Huddersfield, on an initial one month deal starting from 28 January 2010. On 1 February 2010, this deal was extended to 8 May 2010. In the following season Eccleston was loaned out to Charlton on 13 January 2011, in a deal which expired at the end of the season. On 20 October 2011, it was announced that Eccleston would be joining Rochdale in a one month loan deal. Upon returning to Liverpool, Eccleston resumed playing for the Reserves, for whom he finished as the top League goalscorer, with eight strikes. Following an extended period of time away from the first team, Eccleston made the matchday squad for the Premier League home tie against Wigan on 24 March 2012, although he spent the full match on the bench.

In July 2012, new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers brought Eccleston on the first team's pre season tour of the USA. Eccleston played the first half of the side's 1-1 draw against Toronto.

On 31 August 2012, Liverpool confirmed that Eccleston had left the club to join former teammates Tom Ince and Gerardo Bruna at Blackpool.

Controversy[]

Eccleston courted controversy in September 2011 after stating his belief that the 9/11 terrorist attacks in America were not committed by terrorists, alluding to the conspiracy theory that it was the work of the US government. Eccleston tweeted: "I aint going to say attack don't let the media make u believe that was terrorist that did it." Eccleston was placed under investigation by Liverpool for the comments.
