Sotirios Kyrgiakos (born 23 July 1979) is a Greek international defender who played for Liverpool from 2009 until the summer of 2011.

Liverpool career[]

Kyrgiakos signed a two year contract, with an option for a third year, on 29 August 2009. He was handed the number 16 shirt. Kyrgiakos was brought in to fill the void created by the departure of Sami Hyypia.

His first goal came against Stoke on 16 January 2010 in a 1-1 draw. He scored his second league goal for Liverpool against Blackpool which Liverpool lost 2-1 at home.

Despite spending much of his career at Anfield as the fourth-choice centre back, Kyrgiakos did frequent the starting line-up during his two seasons at the club and became a cult figure in the process. Perhaps his outstanding spell in a Liverpool shirt came during the winter of 2009/10, in which time his gritty displays helped Liverpool to some much-needed results and a period of stability in a season that was proving disastrous for the club. At the time, former Liverpool great Stan Collymore commented that Kyrgiakos was "keeping Rafa in the job."

Kyrgiakos again came to prominence in the early phase of Roy Hodgson's tenure, earning the player of the month award for October 2010. He was again credited for helping Liverpool put together a string of results after a disappointing start to the season.

On 22 August 2011, Liverpool confirmed that Kyrgiakos had left the club to join German outfit, VfL Wolfsburg.
