Mascherano made his debut for Liverpool against Sheffield United on February 24, 2007 and was praised by the Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez and team captain Steven Gerrard after Liverpool's 4-0 victory. After playing in a match against Arsenal on March 31, Benitez called Mascherano a "monster of a player".Also the Liverpool fans have nicknamed him "The Chief" His first Champions League appearance came in the quarter-final first leg against PSV in Eindhoven on April 3. Hastily establishing himself as a starter at the club, Mascherano played in the Champions League Final that year against AC Milan, which Liverpool lost 2-1. He has claimed to be keen to stay at Liverpool, and hopes to turn his loan deal into a permanent move. Mascherano has said "I'd love to stay and I will do everything I can to do so.", although this will mean Liverpool will have to negotiate with Media Sports Investments, as Mascherano is still owned by them, along with Carlos Tevez of Manchester United. Despite some reports published on the Internet Mascherano is yet to sign a permanent deal with Liverpool.
