José Miguel González Rey, better known as Josemi, (born 15 November 1979) is a Spanish defender who played for Liverpool between 2004-2005.

Liverpool career[]

Josemi moved to Liverpool as Rafael Benitez's first signing, joining from Malaga on 27 July 2004 for £2,000,000. Benitez described him as "good in defence, good in the air" and said that he "can make this team stronger." He made his debut in the Champions League third qualifying 1st leg against Grazer AK on 10 August 2004. His league debut came shortly after on 14 August 2004 against Tottenham in a 1-1 draw. Having been an ever present in the 2004-05 season up until new year, the reemergence of Steve Finnan led to Josemi being dropped and the majority of his further appearances that season were as a substitute. He made 23 appearances in his debut season.

The next season saw Josemi be used less frequently, as he made just 12 appearances. After being deemed surplus to requirements, Josemi was sold to Villarreal on 1 January 2006 in a swap deal that brought Jan Kromkamp to Anfield. He left Liverpool having made 35 appearances without scoring.
