Matthew George Regan (born 22 February 1994) is an English footballer who played as a central defender for the Liverpool Academy and Liverpool Reserves. His career on Merseyside spanned three years, from 2009 until 2012.

Liverpool career[]

Regan was signed by Liverpool in 2009 from Welsh side Wrexham amid interest from a host of other clubs, and was immediately made captain of the under-16 side. He was highly regarded at Liverpool as a traditional English centre back, possessing good tackling and aerial abilities. Describing his own style of play, Regan stated "I see myself as a proper defender. I clear the ball when it needs clearing. I don't try anything fancy but I can play out from the back if I need to." Regan moved to the under-18 squad for the 2010-11 season, in which he made 11 appearances and scored 2 goals. He then made the joint-highest number of appearances for the side in the 2011-12 season with 26. He was often utilised as a full back in that season to accommodate the likes of Joseph Rafferty and Jakub Sokolik. Unfortunately Regan was unable to convince the club to retain him after the season and he was released in the summer of 2012. He went on to sign for Nottingham Forest.
