Mohamed "Momo" Lamine Sissoko Gillan (born 22 January 1985) is a Malian international footballer who played for Liverpool from 2005-2008. Sissoko left in 2008, joining Juventus for around £8,200,000.

Liverpool career[]

Sissoko signed for Liverpool on 13 July 2005 from Spanish side Valencia, for a fee believed to be £5,600,000. Manager Rafael Benitez spoke of his past experiences of Sissoko at his old club Valencia, saying "He's had two good years with Valencia where he has won trophies. I know him well and he's a very good player." He also described the Malian international as "a young central midfielder who plays a high-energy game with a high tempo." He was also likened to Patrick Vieira, but Benitez hinted that he could be even better saying "Sissoko runs more than Vieira. In a couple of years he will be more dynamic than Vieira and a better player."

He made his debut in the first leg of the Champions League qualifying round against Lithuanian club FBK Kaunas on 26 July 2005. His league debut came shortly after in a 0-0 stalemate against Middlesbrough on 13 August 2005. Due to his position as a tough tackling holding midfielder, goals were never expected to be frequent, and in his debut season he failed to score a single goal in 45 appearances. In fact, Sissoko had to wait until his third season at the club before scoring his first goal, which came against Sunderland on 25 August 2007 - a 25 yard strike which also happened to be Liverpool's 7000th goal.

Due to the presence of Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano in the centre of midfield, Sissoko was used less often in the 2007-08 season. As a result of this he was sold to Italian club Juventus on 30 January 2008, for a fee in the region of £8,200,000. His career at Liverpool was held up by a persistent eye injury, and a dislocated shoulder.
