Nuri Kazım Şahin (born 25 November 1988) is a German-born Turkish midfielder who played for Liverpool on loan from Real Madrid in the 2012-13 season.

Liverpool career[]

Struggling to get sufficient game time at parent club Real Madrid, the highly-rated Sahin was made available for loan in the summer of 2012. After a protracted transfer saga in which both Liverpool and Premier League rivals Arsenal vied for the young Turk's signature, Sahin eventually put pen-to-paper on a season-long loan deal at Anfield on 25 August 2012. He wore shirt number 4 for the 2012-13 season.

Sahin credited the passion of manager Brendan Rodgers as a factor that influenced his decision to join the Reds. He also spoke of the positive words said to him by Real Madrid teammate and ex-Liverpool midfield icon Xabi Alonso about the Merseyside club, which helped to persuade Sahin to opt for Anfield. In signing, Sahin became the first Turkish footballer to join the Liverpool first team.

Sahin made his debut in a 0-2 defeat against Arsenal on 2 September 2012 at Anfield. He was replaced in the 67th minute by Jonjo Shelvey. On 26 September 2012, he scored his first goals for the club, netting a brace in a 2-1 League Cup victory over West Brom. He followed this up with his first League goal for the club on 29 September 2012. In the 47th minute, he tapped in from close range against Norwich City at Carrow Road after being set up by Luis Suarez.

Unfortunately, Sahin failed to maintain this form as he appeared to struggle to adapt to the pace of the Premier League. He also reportedly complained that he was being played out of position by Brendan Rodgers- preferring a deeper role to the more advanced position he was being asked to play. He made what would prove to be his final Premier League appearance on 11 November 2012 in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea. His final appearance in a Liverpool shirt came on 6 December 2012 in the Europa League tie away to Udinese, however he was forced off after only 12 minutes with a broken nose.

In the January transfer window, Liverpool sought to end Sahin's loan deal early, conceding he was unlikely to make the impact that was hoped of him when he signed. On 11 January 2013, Liverpool confirmed that Sahin's loan deal had been ended so that he could sign on loan for his former club Borussia Dortmund. He ended his loan spell with 3 goals in 12 appearances.
