Raymond Neal "Ray" Clemence is a former English international footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Liverpool between 1967-1981. During his years at the club, he made a total of 665 appearances, which places him joint third (with Emlyn Hughes) for the most appearances for Liverpool.

Liverpool careerEdit

After being spotted by Bill Shankly whilst playing for Scunthorpe United, Clemence signed for Liverpool on 24 June 1967 for £18,000. Upon signing the Skegness born 'keeper, Shankly said "He’s a nicely-built lad, with one or two mannerisms, and maybe a wee bit cocky. But we’re getting him in plenty of time to work on him." Clemence made his debut in his second season at the club, in a League Cup third round match against Swansea City on 25 September 1968.

He became more involved with the first team during the 1969-70 season, mostly during the latter half of the season. His big breakthrough into the team came in the following season, when he established himself as Liverpool's first choice goalkeeper. In this season he set the Liverpool record for conceding the fewest number of goals (22).

Clemence played his last match for Liverpool on the biggest stage - the European Cup final. The match took place on 27 May 1981 against Real Madrid, and Liverpool came out as 1-0 winners. Wanting to seek out a new challenge, Clemence left Liverpool in the summer of 1981, joining Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £300,000.
